The Water Corporation has advised the City that it is looking at ways to reduce peak period water use in Dunsborough over the busy summer holiday period to ensure the continuity of its water supply to homes and businesses in the area.
With an annual surge in numbers of people to the region, coupled with hotter weather, people are asked to minimise their water use to prevent the risk of water supply shortages.
While the City will continue to irrigate its public open spaces, the capacity will be reduced in the following areas during the busy holiday season in support of this approach:
- Centennial Park (east of Chester Way)
- Amiro Park Cape Rise
- Meelup Beach park west of toilet block
- Greenhaven Park
The City will also be turning off the Dunsborough CBD water feature and local standpipes to prevent unnecessary use of limited water supplies.
Mayor Phill Cronin said: “While this means some of our public open spaces may start to look a bit dry and possibly a little less attractive over summer, we will ensure that sporting grounds receive enough water to remain in use. The City has successfully sought funding to allow the extension of the federally funded Dunsborough Non-Potable Water Network from the new Dunsborough Lakes Sporting Precinct to the Dunsborough Playing Fields, which will assist in reducing the City’s use of scheme water at this location.”
“I want to encourage everyone to do the right thing and join us in being waterwise over summer. Water is a precious resource and we don’t want to see WaterCorp introducing restrictions if supply runs low.” said Mayor Cronin.
We thank the community for their consideration and review of their own water use as we enter the busy summer period.
Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Council Plan (2024 - 2034) Key Theme Environment – An environment that is valued, conserved and able to be enjoyed by current and future generations.
