Cr Cherise Woodhams has unfortunately had to resign from her position as a City of Busselton Councillor due to health reasons.
Elected to Council in October 2023 for a two-year term, Cr Woodhams recently requested and was provided a leave of absence by the Council until early February 2023. On further medical advice however Cr Woodhams has now resigned.
In announcing her resignation, Cr Woodhams thanked fellow Councillors and City officers for their support. “I was humbled and honoured to be elected and thank everyone who voted for me. I had great intention to contributing positively to the Council and community however I must acknowledge my limitations at this time due to health reasons. Considering the early stage of the new council forming, I believe that resigning now will allow my successor to integrate as smoothly as possible and position them to start strongly in the new year.”
After receiving Councillor Woodhams’s resignation, Mayor Phill Cronin thanked Cr Woodhams for her interest in running for Council. “Council is of course disappointed for Cr Woodhams, however personal health must come first and the role of a Councillor can be demanding. I wish her all the best for the future.”
Under reforms to the Local Government Act 1995, this vacant position on Council has been filled by the first unelected candidate – Ms Val Kaigg. Ms Kaigg has been offered and accepted the vacancy and will be sworn in as a Councillor at a future Council Meeting.
Mayor Phill Cronin said “On behalf of the Council I welcome Ms Kaigg to the team and look forward to working with her.”
Objectives outlined in this statement are aligned with the City of Busselton’s Strategic Community Plan (2021 - 2031) Key Themes Leadership: A Council that connects with the community and is accountable in its decision making.
