Busselton Jetty Caravan Park transitions to an electric vehicle

Published on Wednesday, 4 September 2024 at 3:12:51 PM

As part of our ongoing commitment to becoming more environmentally sustainable, the City is continuing to explore more environmentally friendly and cost-effective ways to manage its vehicle fleet.

At the Busselton Jetty Caravan Park, a brand new electric sports-field utility vehicle (UTV) has just been purchased, which will be used daily by staff for checking bins, irrigation, general work around the grounds and moving materials or people. This UTV will replace an older diesel-fuelled vehicle, enabling a transition towards cleaner, greener park operations, whilst significantly reducing the level of noise emitted from daily work vehicle operations around the site. In time, it is also expected to cost less overall than other non-green alternatives.

Using a series of rechargeable 6V batteries, the UTV does not require sophisticated charging infrastructure. The City already sources 100% Natural Power for 16 facilities through a local government Power Purchasing Agreement, part of a Sustainable Energy Project coordinated by the WA Local Government Association (WALGA). This has resulted in the City sourcing approximately 50% of its electricity needs from Natural Power. In addition, the City has installed PV solar systems on several community facilities, including the Geographe Leisure Centre, Administration Building, Busselton Library, Naturaliste Community Centre, Busselton Depot and Community Resource Centre to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs.
