On 24 April 2024 a special meeting of electors was called by members of the community with their purpose being for the Council “to hear the views of the electors in regard to the proposed implementation and construction of a Wind Turbine Farm in Geographe Bay.” During a special meeting of electors six motions were moved and carried by the electors present.
On 1 May 2024 a Special Council Meeting was held to consider the motions put forward by the electors. The Council unanimously resolved to make a submission to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water on behalf of the electors and community members of the City of Busselton regarding the Federal Government’s proposal to declare an area for offshore wind development in the Indian Ocean off the Bunbury region in Western Australia (Proposal).
The submission will acknowledge that approximately 130 people who attended the City’s special meeting of electors collectively expressed strong concern regarding the Proposal. Concerns raised by electors at the meeting included the Federal Government’s consultation process for the Proposal, the impact of the Proposal on the business and tourism industry, the marine environment, as well as real estate and development.
The Council also resolved to write to the following members of parliament to confirm their support or opposition to the Proposal:
- Hon. Chris Bowen;
- Hon. Tania Plibersek;
- Hon. Roger Cook;
- Hon. Reece Whitby;
- Hon. Murray Watt; and
- Hon. Don Punch.
All correspondence sent to and received by the relevant State and Federal Government Ministers will be included in the City’s Information Bulletin which is publicly available through the Ordinary Council Meeting Agenda and Minutes.
