At its December Council meeting, the Council considered an item of urgent business, a motion which requested consideration of using the City’s current cash reserves to fund the completion of Saltwater rather than proceeding with the previous Council decision to take out loans and increase rates to cover it. The Council resolved 6/3 to revoke and change parts of the previous decision made in November, and to enable the new funding approach to be implemented.
This change will see the City use its Building Reserve fund to complete the construction of Saltwater, rather than the City taking out a new loan and increasing rates.
Mayor Phill Cronin said: “There was lengthy debate on this item and a recording can be viewed on the City’s You Tube channel. We understand there has been a high level of community interest in Saltwater and we have now decided to fund the additional amount required using our current cash reserves rather than imposing another rate increase on ratepayers. Both options were available to the Council and ultimately the Council decided loans and rate increases were not the way to proceed.”
“We look forward to seeing Saltwater open in 2025 and in the next few months our contractors will be putting the finishing touches on the building” said Mayor Cronin.
