City supporting access and inclusion

The City of Busselton has been working alongside NDIS Partners in Community (APM Communities) for a number of years to overcome barriers around access and inclusion.

Recently we have been working together in the recreation space. We know that for people living with disability recreational opportunities are essential, as they provide a means of improving physical and mental health, promoting independence and socialisation, and improving overall quality of life.

The City’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan focuses on ensuring the current and future population is engaged and connected within community, irrespective of ability. In 2022 the City was one of 10 local governments selected to participate in the ‘Building Inclusive Communities WA’ project. The project focused on building community capacity through mentoring and a range of practical supports to ensure all people feel a sense of belonging, can actively participate in community life and have a valued role to play.

“We need to see a cultural shift in the way we think about disability. The practice of businesses being all inclusive to those living with disability needs to become normalised.” Mayor Grant Henley said.

APM Communities and Disability Surfing Australia (DSA) have been working alongside local business ‘SUP Life Busselton’ in building their capacity to provide all-inclusive recreational paddle boarding opportunities for people living with a disability.

SUP Life Busselton will be hosting an all-inclusive come and try day as part of the City’s Harmony Day celebrations. SUP Life Busselton will be available for people with disabilities to have a go at paddle boarding at the Busselton foreshore on Sunday 19 March 2023 from 9.00am to 12.00pm. Sand play and a sausage sizzle will also be available.
